Minister plans to ban alcohol advertising

Minister of Health and Labour Jevgeni Ossinovski (SDE) plans on implementing restrictions on alcohol advertising in Estonia that the previous government failed to pass in March, reported daily Eesti Päevaleht.

At its Thursday cabinet meeting, the Estonian government approved in principle Ossinovski’s memorandums on alcohol and tobacco.

“My goal is to ban [alcohol] advertising, just like tobacco advertising has been banned for 15 years already,” Ossinovski said in an interview with the paper. “I don’t see any reason to treat tobacco and alcohol differently. As the previous government had a different vision, I have offered compromises.” He suggested that an advertisement for alcohol could only describe the product, not create any sort of landscape for it. “Just like law firms are advertised: law firm so-and-so, contact information — saying we have the world’s best lawyers is not allowed.”

The minister added that it would be easiest to simply impose a complete ban on alcohol advertising. “I will definitely propose it,” he said.

In November 2015, the capital city of Tallinn imposed a complete ban on outdoor advertising for quick loans and alcohol and tobacco products.
