Estonia No. 2 in world in Internet freedom

The US human rights organization Freedom House released new rankings that put Estonia behind only Iceland as the the freest place in the world for the Internet, at least out of the selection of 65 countries used by the group.

Iceland had a score of 6, the same as last year, while Estonia had 8 points, one better than last year’s 9.

Iceland and Estonia were followed by Canada, Australia, Germany, the US, France, Italy and Japan, in that order. The other Baltic and Nordic countries were not assessed.

Thirty-six of the 65 countries dropped in terms of Internet freedom. Russia (50th), Turkey (43rd) and Ukraine (22nd) had the biggest setback. Ukraine fell to “partly free” status from last year’s “free.”
