Government has approved today a draft act according to which the Estonian Informatics Centre will be transformed into an executive agency since 1 June 2011. The new Estonian Informatics Board (RIA) will expand the fields related to information systems security and get a new supervisory unit.
According to Juhan Parts, Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications, society needs more cyber security. “Estonia has been one of the leading countries in this field and the Estonian Informatics Board has to provide a high-level cyber security for us“, said the Minister.
The Board to be founded will have three different roles in organizing cyber security. First, a system of security measures will be developed further to keep pace with the fast development of technologies, changing dangers and more sophisticated attacks. The second role lies in cyber security planning, monitoring of the situation and preventive activities. So far the centre has been involved in prevention work and training of IT specialists, now more attention will be paid to planning and monitoring. RIA’s third role will be to arrange national supervision over the implementation of the Emergency Act and the Public Information Act.
RIA’s reorganisation and the expansion of cyber security activities will require extra EEK 12.9 million per year.
